This seemingly simple toy is full of opportunities for developing children’s skills.
Visual and Spatial Perception. Nesting or stacking works on the child’s depth perception, their understanding of objects in space and their eye-hand coordination. When you’re stacking them up, you have to look where to place them in relation to yourself and in relation to the object you’re playing with. These pieces are able to sit on top of each other to give guidance as they stack, it also provide support so that the child will be encouraged with building on each other. As they grow older, they can use them as building blocks and expand on their imagination and include it into their pretend play.
Gross Motor Skills. Starting at 6 months, children are beginning to sit-up and gradually holding toys midline while navigating their core strength. Presenting the different sizes provides them with a toy to toss objects in and even just to hold and explore. While having this interesting and colorful toy, this becomes an opportunity to gain postural stability and coordinating their movements as they move their hands, lift toys, stack and maintain their balance during their play.
Language. Use the boxes to encourage counting, distinguish sizes, learn colors or match colors with other objects, top/bottom. You can even begin turn-taking by taking turns to stack a piece between adult and child or with another child.
Creative Play. Kids will naturally play and think outside the box. Providing them with open-ended toys can encourage them to look for different ways to play with it. Mix them with other toys, play with it alone, play with it with just some pieces, use them as containers... and much more!
Bundle your play with colorful balls and/or wooden dolls for enhancing fine motors skills as they hold and manipulate the toys, gross motor skills as they learn to move around with toys in hand. They can even enhance play skills with the toy itself, jointly with other toys, while folding in activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills.
